Andrew Lawrence has just left Summer Bay and is unaware he is being groomed to join the infamous Vita Nova cult, but this certainly isn’t the first time a Home and Away character has been held hostage

Joshua Hewson’s character Andrew Lawrence from Home and Away just said goodbye to Summer Bay with the lady he believes to be his mother.

Andrew initially resisted the arrival of Esther Lawrence (Mandy McElhinney) and her reunion with her son, but he soon warmed to the idea and shared an emotional farewell with Justin Morgan (James Stewart) and Leah Patterson (Ada Nicodemou).

The lady they left Andrew home with, however, is not his mother, and Cash Newman shockingly learned this at the end of Friday’s episode (July 14). In fact, they have no idea who she is.

Daily Star has taken a look back at some of the soap opera’s most exciting kidnapping plots as Andrew is being kept captive by the notorious Vita Nova cult.

Murder in self-defence

Dr. Bree Cameron (Juliet Godwin)’s troubled history quickly returned to haunt her after she landed in the Bay in 2022.

It was discovered that Jacob Cameron (Alex Williams), the local doctor in Summer Bay, had abducted Bree and was holding her captive in a secluded area as a result of their terrible marriage.

Bree did her best to maintain a positive attitude while being held against her will at the temporary campground, where Jacob said he planned to create new identities to enable them start a new life.

Bree started writing Remi Carter (Adam Rowland) a letter when she realised there was little hope left, confessing her genuine feelings and reaffirming that it was he she was in love with.

But when Jacob found the letter, he became furious and hit Bree over the head, knocking her unconscious.

She saw Jacob start to dig her grave when the doctor finally recovered.

Bree snuck up behind Jacob and slapped him around the head with the spade, killing him unintentionally when he momentarily dropped the spade.

Bree was cleared of all charges after the police determined that she acted in self-defense throughout the investigation.

Jasmine’s impossible demand

After she began dating Robbo (Jake Ryan), Jasmine Delaney (Sam Frost) found her life to be anything but straightforward.

Robbo’s former adversaries arrived in Summer Bay and stopped Jasmine on her way to the airport, killing her bodyguard Scott (Trent Baines), then loading her into the trunk of a vehicle.

The doctor was then taken prisoner by Des (Matt Zeremes) and his two accomplices Lenny and Fitz in an abandoned warehouse.

Lenny was shot by Scott during the abduction and dying; Jasmine said he needed immediate medical care or he would perish.

Des told Jasmine she had to preserve Lenny or she would die, declining to take Lenny to the hospital.

In the end, Robbo managed to save Jasmine, although he later passed away from wounds acquired in a car accident that his adversaries had caused.

‘Most shocking storyline to date’

In the year 2020, recurring character Leah Patterson vanished into thin air after getting an unknown call.

When Justin contacted the police, they disclosed that they had spoken to Leah, who maintained that she was fine and had chosen to break up with her partner.

Later, Leah called Justin and said she had moved on with her life and didn’t want anything to do with him anymore.

Later, it came to light that Leah was being held captive by Douglas, a violent man whose wife had left him after viewing a video on Leah’s blog concerning domestic abuse.

In an unexpected change of events, Douglas gave Leah a wedding gown and informed her that they would be getting married the next day.

After fighting Douglas, Leah was able to flee. She ran into the woods while wearing her bridal gown and later met up with Justin.

Left in desert to die

When he abducted Casey Braxton (Lincoln Younes) and kept him captive in the desert back in 2012, Kyle Braxton sparked chaos.

Casey was shackled to an abandoned car in the desolate Australian outback without food or water by Kyle, played by Nic Westaway.

He later admitted that the reason for the terrible plan was that Casey had shot and killed their father Danny (Andy McPhee) before returning to his regular life.

Kyle was put into foster care when Danny abandoned him, and after his father died, he eventually developed a grudge against his half-brothers.

Before Kyle’s older brother Daryl “Brax” Braxton (Steve Peacock) saved them, Casey was saved by Tamara Kingsley (Kelly Paterniti), who Kyle had abandoned and left to die.

Kyle unexpectedly made his way back to Summer Bay, where he eventually forged strong ties with his half-brothers.

Held hostage by own son

Fan favourite character Irene Roberts (Lynne McGranger) vanished in 2016 with no word to her friends back in the Bay.

After months off-screen, viewers were finally given an insight into her suffering and it was revealed she was being held hostage by Mick – the man who claimed to be her long-lost son.

Irene was being held in a derelict house, having to obey Mick’s every demand.

Heading back to the Bay, Mick then set his sights on Irene’s lodger Olivia, who becomes more concerned about Irene’s safety.

He threatened Olivia with being taken away if she didn’t get in the car, saying she would never see Irene again.

Mick became even angrier as a result of the incident and started dragging Irene through the underbrush while holding onto a rope.

It was revealed that Irene was raped by her uncle when she was 15 and became pregnant with Mick, whom she gave up right away.

Mick blamed Irene for his irrational behaviour, claiming she threw him away and he was raised in an abusive foster home.

Irene eventually escaped as he prepared to relocate her, and he was apprehended by authorities.
